"Virginia Legends Walk identifies Virginians who have had a significant and often complicated impact on the course of Virginia history. Sadly, it recognizes that some of these Virginians changed the course of history by justifying slavery and racism and to state that this occurred in a different time does not excuse the fact that not only did it happen but that the repercussions of this philosophical economic path continue to plague many Americans to this very day. Many other inductees honored the state through their contributions in the realms of art, science, and business. To that end, The Virginia Legends Walk installs plaques that that recognizes these Virginians in a Virginia Beach Public Garden/Walk dedicated to this purpose, and to provide historical themed programming for visitors to the resort area ."

"Those Virginians whose plaques appear on the columns today were nominated by the public and elected by a group of judges described in the "Judging" tab of this website. Going forward, the Directors of the Virginia Legends Walk have committed to improving the nomination and induction process to ensure that those men and women who are listed on the plaques better represent overall Virginia values."
